"Horne is establishing a cultural assertion, one that calls attention to both similarities and contrasts, through things that linger in mind. It is a kind of survival. One says “survival” because authenticity is losing ground fast in the face of technology, the refusal to acknowledge art history, and overpopulation. There is no answer but to illustrate the decline. If we understand that we are now overwhelmed by goods, Horne’s implied judgment of the dangers of gilt trappings warns her audience that more is less. It is a weighted admonition." -Jonathan Goodman
